Since its inception in the 1970s, BRDB's contribution to the current 'rural development' for rural development was very much appreciated today. BRDB's contribution to the double-growth of the agricultural sector doubled in the 1970s is universally recognized. At that time, BRDB has been able to accelerate the irrigation system through distribution of various types of hand held tube wells, deep tube wells. BRDB also undertook various projects / programs for the development of irrigation system till the end of the 1970s and early 1950s.
Subsequently, BRDB implemented its original activities, i.e. implementation of rural development projects along with the implementation of several specialized projects along with two-level co-operatives; For example: Women Development Program (1973), Youth Development Program (1978), Non-Proliferation Program (1984) etc. Based on the evaluation of success of these specialized projects implemented by BRDB, a number of specialized organizations have been created, such as Women Development Department, Youth Development Department, PDBF etc.
In the year 2003-2004, BRDB received a grant of Tk 32 billion in recurring (agricultural) loan sector from the government, which added new dimensions to BRDB's field level activities. For the 1986-1995 period, a sustainable system was developed in the name of "link model" in rural development by joint initiative of BRDB, Bird, RDA, Bangladesh Agriculture School, JICA and Kyoto University of Japan. Through this internationally recognized model, Vertical Linkage among rural, union and upazila level development workers, and ensuring the socio-economic development of the rural population creates horizontal linkage among villagers and service providers such as government and private development workers and public representatives. The main objective of the link model of partnership rural development project (PRDP) is to implement the Bottom Up Planning to ensure public services. The main tool of this model is the union coordination committee meeting (UCCM). UCCM is a Mini-Parliament, where all the development activities of the union are included in the participation, transparency and accountability of the people. Due to the success of the PRDP, the project is currently in process of approval for the 3rd phase. Besides, BRDB is implementing a number of specialized projects such as: "Northern Poverty Alleviation Program" (UCNIC) project is being implemented by considering the poorest of the country. The project has been taken to create 'Basic Crop Production, Conservation, Processing and Marketing Program' to increase production of basic crops like oil, pulses and spices. In addition to activating deep and shallow tube-wells, "irrigation expansion program" has been taken in order to further enhance the irrigation program.
In recognition of this work, BRDB's contribution to GDP in the 2010 study of "Bangladesh Research Development Organization" (BIDS) was described as 1.93%. These activities of BRDB continue in the year 2014-2015. Currently, BRDB's 7 development projects are in progress, in line with MDG, Vision-2121 and 6th Five-Year Plan.
